What is House of the Dragon?

House of the Dragon is the prequel to Game of Thrones, set about 200 years earlier. It is based on George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood and chronicles the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. In short: a family with too many dragons and too little communication.

House of the Dragon Season 1 Summary: "What if the whole family had dragons and management issues?"

It all starts with King Viserys Targaryen, a man whose main hobby is avoiding conflict... which leads to absolutely every possible conflict. He decides to name his daughter Rhaenyra as his heir, a revolutionary act because in Westeros, equal opportunity wasn't exactly in vogue.

Meanwhile:

• His brother Daemon goes through life causing diplomatic incidents.
• Alicent Hightower, Rhaenyra's best friend, ends up marrying Rhaenyra's father. Awkward level: legendary.
• Children are born, grandchildren, rumors, more children, and even more rumors.
• Everyone hates each other a little more each day.

After several time jumps, the friendship between Rhaenyra and Alicent is more broken than a glass at a Targaryen wedding. When Viserys dies, the Hightowers quickly crown Aegon II, Alicent's son, even though Rhaenyra was the official heir.

Season 1 ends with:

• Many dragons.
• Two opposing factions: the Blacks (Rhaenyra) and the Greens (Alicent and Aegon II).
• The death of Lucerys at the hands of Aemond and Vhagar.
• Rhaenyra looking like "now we've really messed up."

House of the Dragon Season 2 Summary: "War is no longer a threat, it's the business plan"

After Lucerys' death, everyone decides that talking things out is overrated. The Dance of the Dragons, the Targaryen civil war, officially begins.

Several important things happen:

• Rhaenyra tries to maintain some sanity.
• Daemon makes questionable decisions. As always.
• Aegon II proves that being king doesn't come with an instruction manual.
• Aemond becomes one of the most dangerous characters in Westeros.
• Alicent begins to wonder if all this was a good idea. Spoiler: no.

Highlights of Season 2:

• A particularly gruesome murder in King's Landing that makes everyone want even more revenge.
• The Battle of Rook's Rest, where several dragons clash and Aegon ends up quite a bit crispier than recommended.
• Rhaenyra recruits new dragonriders because, apparently, you can never have enough dragons for a civil war.
• Daemon spends half the season in Harrenhal having strange visions, reflecting on his life, and acting as if he were in medieval therapy.

By the end of Season 2:

• The Greens are quite battered.
• The Blacks have more dragons than ever.
• Alicent and Rhaenyra try to prevent disaster... too late.
• All armies begin to move.
• All-out war is about to erupt.
