How to care for your soy candle: a complete guide to make it last longer
Compartir
Soy wax candles have clear advantages over paraffin ones: they burn slower, cleaner, and release their scent consistently. But for all of that to truly happen, they need specific care.
If your candle has ever burned unevenly, left wax on the edges, or lost its scent prematurely, it’s most likely not a problem with the candle — but with how it was used. This guide explains exactly what to do.
Why soy wax needs more attention than paraffin
Soy wax is softer and has a lower melting point than paraffin. That makes it cleaner and more natural, but also more sensitive to:
- Wick length
- First burn time
- Drafts
- Ambient temperature
Knowing this makes the difference between a candle that lasts 50 hours and one that’s ruined after 10.
The first burn: the most important step
Wax has memory. What happens in the first burn determines how the candle will behave throughout its lifespan.
Golden rule: let the wax pool reach the edges of the container completely before extinguishing.
For a standard soy candle, this usually takes between 2 and 3 hours depending on the diameter. If you extinguish it sooner, the wax will "remember" that incomplete pool and repeat the pattern in every subsequent burn — creating the tunneling effect.
What is the tunneling effect?
It's when the candle burns only through the center, leaving an unmolten wax wall around it. Once it appears, it's very difficult to correct and can waste up to 30% of the wax.
How to trim the wick correctly
The wick is the most overlooked element and the one that most affects the quality of the burn.
Before each lighting:
- Trim the wick to 5 mm with scissors or a wick trimmer
- Remove any burnt wick debris from inside the candle
- Make sure the wick is centered in the container
Signs that the wick is too long:
- The flame is large and unstable
- Black smoke appears
- The candle "sputters"
- The container overheats
A well-trimmed wick produces a small, stable, and quiet flame. That's what you're looking for.
How long to burn the candle in each session
| Minimum recommended | Maximum recommended |
|---|---|
| 1 hour (for the scent to be released well) | 4 consecutive hours |
Exceeding 4 hours can overheat the container, degrade the fragrance, and shorten the candle's lifespan. After each session, let it cool completely before relighting.
How to store your soy candle
Soy wax is especially sensitive to light and heat. To keep it in perfect condition:
- Store it with the lid on when not in use — it protects the fragrance and prevents dust accumulation
- Avoid direct sunlight — it can discolor the wax and degrade essential oils
- Stable temperature — sudden temperature changes can cause the wax surface to crack or a whitish layer (frosting) to appear. This is a natural phenomenon in soy wax and does not affect quality or scent
- Away from heat sources — radiators, sunny windows, or hot countertops accelerate fragrance evaporation
Frosting: what it is and why you shouldn't worry
If your soy candle has a whitish or crystallized layer on the surface, it is not in bad condition. It's called frosting and it's a natural characteristic of pure soy wax — a sign that it contains no artificial additives to prevent it.
It does not affect the scent, duration, or burn quality. It's simply soy wax being soy wax.
Common mistakes that shorten your candle's life
- ❌ Extinguishing on the first burn before the pool reaches the edges
- ❌ Not trimming the wick between burns
- ❌ Leaving it lit for more than 4 consecutive hours
- ❌ Placing it near an open window or fan
- ❌ Storing it without a lid in an environment with strong odors
- ❌ Blowing to extinguish it — use a snuffer or carefully bend the wick to avoid smoke
When to know your candle has reached its end?
When there is less than 1 cm of wax left at the bottom, it's time to retire it. Continuing to burn it can overheat the glass or ceramic container and be dangerous.
You can clean the empty container with hot water and reuse it — for storing small items, as a planter, or simply as a decorative vase.
At Monsters Candles, we work only with certified organic soy wax
All our candles are made with natural soy wax and lead-free cotton wicks. Each formula is tested to ensure a clean burn, consistent fragrance, and real duration — not just what looks good on the label.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the surface of my soy candle white?
It's frosting, a natural phenomenon of pure soy wax. It does not affect quality or scent.
Can I salvage a candle with the tunneling effect?
In some cases, yes: wrap the container in aluminum foil, leaving a gap at the top, and light it for 2-3 hours. The accumulated heat can melt the wax on the edges. It doesn't always work, but it's worth a try.
How often should I trim the wick?
Before each lighting, without exception.
Do soy candles smell less than paraffin ones?
Not necessarily. Soy wax releases the scent more gradually and consistently. If it seems to smell less in the first few minutes, it's because it doesn't release all the fragrance at once — which is ultimately better for the environment and for the scent's longevity.
Can I use my soy candle in the bathroom?
Yes, but avoid placing it near the shower or in areas with high humidity. Humidity can affect the wick and make lighting difficult.
