The war is no longer a secret

After discovering the existence of the venin and learning the truth about the rebellion, Violet awakens in Aretia to a reality completely different from anything she had known before.

Everything she was taught at Basgiath about Navarre's history begins to crumble. The rebels were not the villains described in the books, and the venin threat has been silenced for years by those who govern the kingdom.

From that moment on, Violet understands that she can no longer simply obey orders. She will have to decide for herself what is right... even if it means confronting everything she had believed until now.

Aretia: the heart of the revolution

The ancient city of Aretia becomes the new refuge for the resistance and one of the most important settings in the novel.

There, Violet discovers how the fight against the venin is truly organized and meets people who have been preparing for years for a war that Navarre refuses to acknowledge.

She also understands the importance of the Chamber of Flames, where infused daggers capable of killing venin are forged. Without these weapons, not even dragon riders have much of a chance against an enemy capable of absorbing magic from the very earth.

The war is no longer just about training soldiers. It's also about manufacturing weapons, securing resources, and convincing other territories that the danger is real.

Basgiath is no longer the same place

Although part of the story takes place in Aretia, Violet also returns to Basgiath to continue her training.

But the academy has changed.

Now she knows too many secrets, must constantly hide information, and every conversation can become a danger.

The trials are even tougher, the instructors seem to demand more than ever, and suspicions grow around some students.

While trying to survive the year, Violet must also learn to live with the burden of a double life.

Violet and Xaden: when love also means trust

If this book demonstrates anything, it's that defeating venin can be simpler than maintaining a relationship.

Violet and Xaden love each other; there's no doubt about that anymore.

The problem is that Xaden continues to keep too many things to himself.

His intention is always to protect her, but Violet is growing tired of uncovering one truth after another. She gradually understands that a relationship cannot be built solely on silences, no matter how good the intentions are.

Even so, they both continue to grow together and learn to trust each other as the war threatens to take everything away from them.

Violet's power continues to evolve

During this second book, Violet stops trying to prove she deserves to be a rider.

Now everyone knows she deserves it.

Her signet, the ability to control lightning, becomes increasingly powerful, and she learns to use it with much more precision during combat.

But her true strength remains the same as at the beginning of the saga: thinking before attacking.

She is capable of connecting clues, analyzing impossible situations, and finding solutions that others would never have imagined. Slowly, she stops being merely a survivor and becomes one of the natural leaders of the resistance.

Andarna is no longer the same

One of the most striking changes in the book stars Andarna.

After awakening from her long Dream, the small golden dragon has completely changed.

She has grown, her appearance is different from other known dragons, and questions about her true origin begin to emerge.

The dragons themselves seem to be keeping secrets related to her, making it clear that Andarna belongs to a very special lineage and that her role will be decisive in the future of the war.

Rebecca Yarros doesn't reveal all the answers yet... but she leaves enough clues for the reader to understand that this is one of the biggest mysteries of the saga.

The venin are no longer a distant threat

While Violet tries to adapt to this new reality, the venin continue to gain ground.

Attacks are becoming more frequent, much more powerful enemies appear, and it's clear that the conflict can no longer be hidden for much longer.

The resistance needs allies.

It needs weapons.

And it needs time.

Three things it has less and less of.

The final battle changes everything

As in previous books, Rebecca Yarros saves her biggest blows for the climax.

The great battle forces all characters to push their limits as they try to contain the venin advance.

The losses are enormous, the sacrifices constant, and victory comes at a very high price.

But the moment no one expected arrives when Xaden makes a desperate decision.

To save Violet and prevent an even greater tragedy, he uses the same dark power he had been fighting for so long.

And that has consequences.

The ending that left us speechless

Yes.

Xaden becomes venin.

Not completely or immediately, but the corruption has begun, and no one knows if it can be stopped.

The man who dedicated the entire saga to protecting Violet becomes the very thing they both feared most.

And Rebecca Yarros ends the book right there.

Without telling us if there's a cure.

Without explaining what will happen next.

And forcing us, once again, to open the next book with more questions than answers.
